Description

EAGLE CANOE CLUB – Paddle on Sunday 17th November 2024

Date – Sunday 17th November 2024

Where – River Little Ouse– Santon Downham , Nr Thetford. OS map Ref : 825874

What – A paddle from St Helens picnic site, near Santon Downham heading up stream towards Thetford and return to the get in point.

What’s it like? It’s a river paddle, along shallow waters. It’s a paddle of about 6 miles, with the possibility of one portage around a weir as we head upstream. It’s a short portage a matter of approx 50 yards albeit up a sloping bank.

This is an ideal stretch of river for canoeists to practice their poling. The river is shallow and in many places has a hard, stony/sandy bed. Whilst you do not have to ‘pole’ this is an ideal place to have a go.

Meet at the club - 0845 hrs for 0900hrs departure. Aiming to be at the launch spot 1000 hrs. Returning mid afternoon.

What to bring? The usual items for a day trip, including waterproofs, additional clothing, packed lunch and drinks packed in waterproof containers. Do also bring a canoe helmet.

Car parking exists at St Helens picnic spot and there is often an ice cream van there in fine weather.

Toilet facilities - available at the club but I can't guarantee any thereafter. There used to be some available at the picnic site but I think they might be out of operation. Failing which I believe there are some public toilets at the Forestry commission car park in Santon Downham.

Transport, cars and roof racks. Those with roof racks always welcome although we will always try to help those without.

On line sign up is available for this trip. Please indicate what sort of craft you are likely to seek to paddle.

Cheers Tim
